Together, we are going to write a letter from the trenches.
Imagine that you are a soldier – Private McKay - in the trenches writing home to his mother. You are 20 years old and have been in the trenches for a couple of weeks.
Have a look at this site to get an idea of what life in the trenches was like -
http://www.firstworldwar.com/features/trenchlife.htm
Here is an example of the kind of letter that could have come from the trenches -

One of the things that really scares private McKay is the amount of rats in the trenches so make sure you mention them in your letter. Here is a site that tells you more about rats in the trenches http://www.spartacus.schoolnet.co.uk/FWWrats.htm (Don’t read this if you are afraid of rats!)
We’ll write this in 6 paragraphs in the comments. I’ll start it off then each person will add their paragraph. The order will be
David – Karen – Allan – Michael – Pamela
The letter should be completed by . . .

Dear Mum,
I hope this letter gets to you. We’re not allowed to write about where we are or things like that but I want to tell you waht it’s like here in a trench somewhere in France.
You wouldn’t belive what its like here. It’s so different from life at home in Scotland.

My dear Mum,
I’m surviving pretty well, as far as conditions will allow, so please don’t worry. We were thankful for the tin of biscuits and cigarettes which we got last Christmas, which made us feel more human again for a while. Looking forward to the finish of this horrible business and seeing you all again back in Auld Reekie.
Your loving son,
Davie
